Description
Background:
While recently working on a build featuring a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, Z71, with the 5.3 DI engine, we discovered a significant airflow restriction issue during testing. While undoubtedly delivering great performance in a stock setup, the intake manifold and throttle body on the truck just wasn’t up to par from a performance aspect. We compared the physical dimensions of the intake manifold and throttle body to that from a similar truck equipped with the larger 6.2L engine.
On the 6.2L intake manifold, we noticed that overall, it was larger, the runner ports were larger, and the runners appeared to shorter in length inside the manifold. While initially concerned about the runners fitting the ports on the heads, we discovered that the 6.2L manifold fit perfectly against the 5.3L heads. On the throttle body, there was enough difference to fit the mouth of the 5.3L throttle body inside the 6.2L one!
And so testing began…
The Process:
The truck we were working on was equipped with a GPI 5.3L DI Cam, GPI Ported and Milled Heads, Kooks Headers and Y-Pipe, and a Circle D Converter. Next, we simply swapped the throttle body and intake manifold out with a stock 6.2L throttle body and intake manifold. No additional tuning was done after swapping! It was definitely a tight fit on the factory plumbing to the air box, but nothing a little grease couldn’t manage!
We then tested this setup through several dyno pulls, and observed a nice increase in both RWHP and RWTQ. Additionally, we noticed that the peak HP shifted up roughly 300 RPMs. While this was indeed a nice pickup, we weren’t satisfied.
Next, we began developing a porting process for the 6.2L intake manifold. As you can see below, looking at the bottom of the manifold, the stands are quite large – and restrictive.
After removing the stands, we then began porting the mouth of the manifold and the runners. Once that was completed, similar to our LS3 Intake Manifold Porting, we epoxied the floor of the manifold, and installed thin, aluminum sheets where we had cut the stands out.
The Results:
After completing the porting process on the 6.2L intake manifold, we installed it along with a stock 6.2L throttle body. Once again, no tuning adjustments were made. A few more dyno pulls later, and the results were impressive to say the least…

Q I have a 5.3 swapped in a vehicle, and the hood clearance is quite tight as is. How much taller is the L86 manifold over the L83? And do you have a before/after dyno of these two intakes anywhere? I'm curious where the gains are located on the curve.

Q I just did this mod on my 2020 silverado trail boss and the truck is throwing 2 codes. P0171 and P0174. Looks like the engine is running lean. I have a corsa cold air intake and an AFE muffler. Do you think the ECM will adapt and add fuel over time?

Asked by on October 19, 2020 2:26 pmAThe ECM is adapting and adding fuel - but when it has to adjust more than 15%, it sets those codes. Likely, it will need to be tuned to fully correct the issue.

Q I installed the stock L86 TB and manifold on 2020 silverado 5.3 10 speed. The truck is throwing 2 codes. P0171 and P0174. Looks like the engine is running lean. I have a corsa cold air intake and an AFE muffler. Any chance the ecm will compensate for the L86 intake over time and fatten up the fuel trims?

A Are you asking if these come with fuel rails or about fitment?A do they come with the kit from an l86 manifold or would we have to retain the originals from the 5.3?

Q It looks like L86 intake has a pcv hook up on top. The L83 PCV is is in crank case valley. Would you just plug? Thank you for your time...

Q I was curious if I added just the stock 6.2 intake and throttle body what gains would i expect. I have a stock 5.3 with a cold air intake and superchips programmer. I noticed the testing was all done a a truck with a cam and ported heads, headers etc.

Q Thinking about doing this swap but also plan on doing procharger or supercharger in future. If I don't get the ported kit can I still boost at later date. Or would I need to go back to l83 set up when I go that route

Q 2015 sierra 5.3. Currently running dual exhaust (no muffler or resonator)but still have 2 cats and running a spectre c.a.i and have a diablo sport tuner but everything inside the engine is stock,would I benefit more from uaing the stock l86 manifold with the perfomance throttle body or would the ported manifold also work well?I'm not planning on doing a cam swap anytime soon.

Any help would be appreciated and I would consider sending the intake manifold to you guys before I install to have it ported and also the throttle body off the lt1. Thanks

Asked by on November 29, 2019 10:55 pmAnswered by the adminThe LT1 manifold and throttle body will bolt to your 6.2 but you will need to change out some PCV lines and move some sensors around. It is not an optimal intake for a truck, as it will lose some of the bottom end torque that a heavy truck needs. A better bang for the buck (if staying N/A) is this ported and stand removed L86 intake. Up to 15 hp improvement without losing that bottom end.

Q How do I relearn the throttle body on a 2015 5.3 Chevy Silverado I have the ported 6.2 throttle body and intake manifold and I think that the idle isn't correct cause you can hear a whistle coming from the throttle and the check engine light comes on when at idle

Q I have ported out my 5.3L TB, I have the Blackhawk C.A.I, and a Gibson Sport Duel exhaust. Nothing crazy, but my truck gets better gas mileage by leaps against my friend's with the same mods, but he went with different manufacturers. I ported his TB and he saw the best gains. Throttle response is awesome, and it still spins the new 285/65-18s with ease. Do you think this ported intake and 6.2L TB with a tune will really wake the motor up? I want to do LT headers and a cam heads package, I'm just concerned about GMC getting dodgy on a warranty. I bought the truck CPO, and got an extended powertrain warranty, she is covered to over 200k miles... but damn if that isn't a long time to wait for more power. You run out of a Chevrolet dealership... any advice?

It will be in the mid/upper rpm. ​ Any time you mod a vehicle with warranty you potentially could cause issues. Typically basic induction mods wont cause problems, but that ultimately depends on the servicing dealer and what specific failure you may have. -
Q Why don't you offer a ported TB? was wondering about matching this with a Katech TB but maybe it is itn't necessary

Q I have the L84, I am assuming that roughly the same power gains will be achieved comparing to the L83? I personally do not care for top HP &TQ but i do like how the curve is moved closer towards the lower rpm.

2015 Silverado LT single cab. Had a stock 5.3 intake and TB, and went to the ported 6.2 intake and TB and installed K&N filter. Followed by a mild tune to remove limiter, torque management, and DOD/AFM. Night and day difference! Truck performed BEYOND my expectations. Excellent bang for your buck! Couldn’t be any happier.

Very impressed of how quickly parts came however I feel that I got a bad katech throttle body and gpi resolution to that was to give me katech engine # because they don’t take returns on that type of stuff so after talking with katech and not getting problem resolved I went elsewhere and ordered a comparable throttle body I’m not putting down gpi or katech I’m sure there great companies but I won’t be ordering anything else from them
Updated 4/8/20: First off just wanted to apologize to gpi as I acted out of frustration when I purchased a defective katech throttle body that was no fault of there own I did not give gpi the proper amount of time to analyze the entire situation however with that being said they have been working with me very closely on this matter I’m happy to say the problem has been resolved and my 2018 Silverado runs and drives completely different now I would recommend the l83 to l86 swap to anyone looking for some bolt on performance I highly recommend using gpi as I will again sorry for this misunderstanding completely my fault gpi has been great I give them a 5 out of 5 for customer service
